How to move system from one database to another

    Applies to Service Manager 7.x

With Service Manager 7.x the P4 database has been eliminated and with that an easy way to move systems if it was still running in P4. Now with SM 7.x HP redsigned the old system unload/load function.

    Unload:
    • Shutdown SM 7.x
    • Navigate to the RUN folder of the installation
    • sm -system_unload -system_directory:
    • Wait. An OOB system usually takes 5 to 10 mintes but a big production system can take many hours

    Load:
    • Create a new EMPTY database and make sure the new SM instance is configured to use that
    • Shutdown SM 7.x
    • Navigate to the RUN folder of the installation
    • sm -system_load -system_directory:
    • Wait
    • You now have a copy of the system on a different database

Replace with the folder of your choice. You can either specify a subfolder to RUN or a full path.

      Hi.

Is there any command that lets you load or unload just one file instead of the whole system?

This would be really helpfull since I cannot load unl files larger than 16Mb. The SM7 client crashes every single time.

      Thank You

Can you explain what this does?

What I understood was that all the HP SM configurations (OOB and custom) are unloaded and can be loaded into a newly installed server.

      Is my interpretation correct?
I thought that all the configurations where in the DB, am I wrong or partly wrong?

This only works between exact HP SM versions correct? What if the build version is the only diference?

      Thank You Tommy.

I didn't have the chance to test this. Would it work if I want to move the contents of an SM instance running on Oracle to a new environment running SQL?

Don't know if this will work. I think later this year I will need to do a similar task for a customer and I will not use this method because it takes a long time due to the amount of data. So only use this method if it is a small system. On a customer system that has 5.000.000 contacts and 5.000.000 locations the unload take about 8 hours from a powerfull aix. The load in a vmware server running on my powerfull windows i7 with 8 cores and 16 GB ram took 72 hours !!

Instead I will add sqllogin information to both oracle and sql in sm.ini and use the normal move sql to sql to move data from oracle to sql.

I expect I will run a test on a oob system later this month when I am back from holliday.
