Default Customization on 3.0. Available on 5.0 ????

    Hi All

Currently we are on service center 3.0 SP2D and we are planing to go for
service center 5.1. Is anyone have upgraded from 3.0 to 5.1.Other thing
I would like to ask whar will happen to all the customization we did on version 3.0 i.e Form Level Changes, Format Control, Link, Dbdict changes.
Do we need to do it again on service center 3.0  or they will be available once we do upgrade .We have done a lot of customization
    on version 3.0

What actually the upgrade utility do

Yes You should be able to keep Your current customizations.

What the upgrade utility will do is copy all the new applications, formats, lnks etc and depending on the decision You make it will either overwrite Your existing formats, links etc OR leave Your customizations as they are and copy the new elements in with a a name preceeeded by NEW.

You need to take special care with display options. If You have changed or added any display options You need to make sure that the condition is filled in the field "user condfition" otherwise it will be overwritten or deleted depending on if it is an existing or new display option.

I have not tried an application upgrade from SC3 to SC5 we reimplemented SC5.

But I have tried an application upgrade from SC5 to SC5.1 and that went very well, I only had to make a few adjustments to a few display options in order to get everything to work.

Hi, I don't have experience with the upgrade utility, not even been around long enough to know SC3;-)

But, if you take such a big step (SC3=>SC5), with all the new and changed functionality that has been build in SC in the meantime, wouldn't it be wiser to reimplement?

A lot of tailoring done, is maybe obsolete now? Or has become a OOB functionality, who knows? Or just 'makes no sense' in the context of SC5 perhaps?

Even if technically speaking the upgrade would work, I have a feeling the result will not be what you want, and you end up throwing things upside down, an make a lot of changes anyway.

Thanks for your update. I have few questions in my mind say

1.we have a dbdict cm3r in ver 3.0 and I hope in ver 5.0 dbdict name would also be same. As we have added number of fields in cm3r and
keys. How the upgrade utility will treat this entry ? Will there be two dbdicts
    cm3r and cm3rnew

2.Will the upgrade utility compare it with the base version(in background) and If find any changes will ask for option either to overwrite or create new

3.The same way for format control, If It finds any new field ask for option
but what would happen for the format control name. In problem Management we have different format control based on category say we have category sw.desktop and format control for opening a problem ticket
problem.sw.desktop.open.g and how upgrade utility will treat this. will it be a completly new term for utility as sw.desktop category would not be there

4.Will the upgrade utility moves the data in the dbdict also

Answer to maggie feedback maggie the biggest issue with us we even do not know what customization has been done becoz there are many number of people worked on this tool and there is no documentation on it
so thinking of reimplement on SC5 would not be possible a tough one

    Cheers

    Hi,
we have currently SC3.0SP5 and now we reimplent in SC5.1. Most of our system was customized by consultants and they didn't left a good documentation.
So for us it's important to reimplement complettly to get a real understanding of our system.

I also agree for the new functions. For example in SC3 there was nothing implemented, which updated automatically the operator file against the member list in the assignment. Now in SC5.1 it's automatic.

We are now at the beginning of our reimplementation.

    Good luck and strong nerves!

    Hi,

We reimplement from 403 to 51, also having a lot of tailoring done, not documented or just not wanted anymore.
So we looked at SC5, to see what's in there, then looked at SC4 to see how we do it now, and had long discussion with the people using it, and al lot of time we all just wondered 'Why are we doing this like that anyway?'.
And also a lot of 'Hey, this is nice in SC5, let's use that!'

And ofcourse this will not be an easy task, but the result has to be a 'clean' system, with only the tailoring we really want or need, and document it this time.

A lot has been discussed here already, for instance have a look at :
    http://www.sc-resources.net/viewtopic.php?t=29449
Tommy has been through most of it already, so there a some good tips there for you to use, or think about..

Deepack, really, upgrading seems to be the easiest way, but it will not be what you want. I even doubt it will work.

And something that is also very usefull; ask an other company, preferrable the same branch, to have a copy of their system to have a look around on how they do things. Some real 'eye-openers' there! Because you tend to get stuck with your own tailoring and way of working/thinking. Has worked for us very well, especially in discussion with the users!

Yes demo of other users systems is very usefull. On the Nordic user group meetings we usually have one or 2 customer presentations.

Well I am completely agree with maggie and thomas about the upgrade. It will be best to look at the service center 5 and give demo to the user
and see how good it is to be using the base version with out any customization and If Its really require to do customization

First Document the change and then look in the actual stuff coding in service center 5 and implement it.This way we can ensure what changes
has been done and most important we will be having a clean system

Let you know guys how the upgrade goes Ya definately will require much much time

    Deepak
