Default New book from Mike Sanders: ServiceCenter 6 Techniques

Mike Sanders have written a new book.

    ServiceCenter professional:

I am please to announce the availability of my newest book, ServiceCenter 6 Techniques.

This book will show you a wide range of powerful coding techniques that can add features to your system quickly. Even if you don't need the specific function it will show you programming methods that you never knew.

It would cost tens of thousands of dollars in consulting to produce the code found in this book.

This books contains a wide range of basic functions including a review of the system language used to tailor ServiceCenter. The document engines is fully described since it is now the basis of all modules. There is a chapter on debugging which will show you techniques not described anywhere else.

It also has these very complex functions:

    - A code generator.
    - A training module that allows you to create training material and tests. It also keeps track of course competition.
    - An assignment engine which can automatically assign tickets.

Please visit http://www.newdaypress.com to see the complete table of contents and a sample chapter.

Is this book any good? His previous ones were as good as the bootcamp materials.

If you have ordered this book, make sure that chapters 3 and 19 are not missing. Mine were missing, and New Day Press corrected the problem by sending me a new book with all the chapters. However, there is a page numbering problem.

The last page of Chapter 19 – Quick Reference is page number 396
The first page of Chapter 20 – RAD Functions is page number 391.

This should not affect the quality of the book. I found their customer service to be courteous and friendly and they resolved my missing chapter problem.

I have not read enough of the book to comment on the quality of the content.

My chapters were missing too and they promptly sent me a new one.
I have gone through a few chapters and some of the techniques are very good. Unfortunately I have encountered some bugs (the author says that it's tested on 6.1 and I am working on 6.2)

It will be good if there was a forum at the author's site where people could discuss to see if the problem's at their end or is it a bug.

I can ask Mike if he would like a specific forum for that here.

    Tommy -

Why not just go ahead and set up the forum so that machoq could post any bugs or difficulties that were found with specific techniques. Mr. Sanders could then post any relevent replies and/or updates for release 6.2.

    All,

Just have to say, with regards to feedback on this book there are many grammatical errors within it that made understanding the language and theory a little harder. As a beginner without any programming experiance I found the over excessive use of commas rather irritating to say the least. I hope the next edition goes through proof reading.

Not too sure if it is worth the $95, but handle to have now I have it.

    Cheers
    Martin

It's not only grammatical errors but also errors in the code.
The author fails to identify the parameter in the RAD function correctly and calls it "name" instead of "names" , resulting in a very difficult time for a newbee. Small mistakes in the code are frustrating but overall the techniques shows in the book are good.

If you find mistakes in the book I suggest you email Mike Sanders so they can be corrected in future editions.

Is there anybody that could write a small review of this book.

I'm interested to buy it, but as I read reply here I'm not so sure about it.

    Thank you!

I got the book a month ago. I have only been in the product itself four months and we are on 5.1, not 6.2, but that is not a problem. At this point it serves as just one more resource: I get into something then start bouncing it off the Essentials book, the Tailoring book, the manuals (going back to 4.0) this site, and now Mike's book.

I am counting on there being some amount of seepage through my thick skull, hopefully to a degree that eventually results in product fluency.

Non-HP material about ServiceCenter is like water in the desert. I was thrilled when I saw this post but as I read about the errors my heart began to sink.

Has anyone read the book since the last reply? Any new reviews?

Don't worry about any errors. All books have errors so this is no different. Buy the book and if you have any problems getting any of the code examples to work you can ask here or I am sure Mike will be happy to answer any questions you send him.
