Thread: Upgrading AC

    Default Upgrading AC

    Morning,

We have Installed AssetCenter 4.4.1 and we're looking at installing the v5.01

We have only just installed 4.4.1 and there isn't really any real data in there yet.

Do you know if it is easy to upgrade to 5 or would it just be easier to delete the existing and install the new one?

Also is there any real difference in the two products? or pretty much the same?

    Thanks,

    Matt

A six-month old question, but might as well answer...

If you leave aside the new Web-Services Client that comes with AC5 you could safely regard AC5 as being AC4.5. New functionality has been added and the schema has had extensions but no (few?) changes to existing structures.

The migration is generally pretty trivial if you have squeaky clean data. That rarely happens though. We generally quote a week (No AC5 Web!) and figure on being done early. Data issues or lots of integration points can change that. of course! If you are an almost brand new AC4.4.1 installation you should be able to upgrade easily. (note: given your later thread this does not seem to have been the case... )

AC5 ("AC4.5") does offer some nice features. The new Client-Resource Relationships make AssetCenter almost fully usable as a CMDB. Unfortunately the relationship are limited, OOB, to Portfolio Items, but that can be worked around if need be. And PI<=>PI covers the vast majority of what anyone will want to do. There are a few other goodies (and bug fixes) tucked away in AC5 as well, but the majority of the effort went into teh Web Services Client.

*The AC5 Web is a whole different animal and implementing it would not be doable in a week. Especially for a DB that had been around a while. Custom wizards have to largely be redone to be able to run on the Web and a bunch of other stuff. AC4->AC5 Windows? Easy. Web? Not so easy.
