Default upgrade to 6.2 or 7

We are in the process of looking at upgrading our SC 6.1 installation and would like the pros and cons of upgrading to both 6.2 and 7

Do you plan on staying with the P4 database? You can maintain that within 6.2 but not in 7.0 (you need to migrate to an RDBMS). Amongst many other factors, this would be one of the primary ones to consider before upgrading.

I happen to support one of the teams that recently upgraded 6.1 to SM7.

Both me and the person doing the actual application upgrade can assure you -
SM7 upgrade procedures are far from complete.

It's better you think about re-implementation of processes in SM7 instead of upgrade.

We are preparing to upgrade from 6.1 to 7.0. Can you provide a few more specific details on lessons learned. Also how is the performance of SM7 using Servlet mode. Same, better or worse than 6.1

    Servlet mode is OK.
It has some disadvantages, like bigger memory footprint,
bit tougher AD integration procedure and slower startup etc.
One, huge, advantage is being able to firewall SM communication.

Frankly, you could also upgrade 6.1 to 6.2 and have this feature,
it's not the main problem with SM7.

    Lessons learned:
    - never put too much trust in "upgrade utility", it's just a tool,
    - make backup before every major change in the process
    - be prepared to talk to the HP support A LOT and don't expect them
to resolve every issue supplied, sorry,
    - SM7 is far from complete, it's a "work in progress".

For a specific issues, I think this part differs on instance to instance basis,
depends on the modification in the system being upgraded etc.
