Default The new PDI 7.1.1 is GA

The new version of Desktop Inventory, v7.1.1, is now GA and should be available worldwide.

This version completely replaces the old IDD product and is a major upgrade that has been under development for 2 years.

It includes many of the features that were meant to be included in the Automated Inventory product and is definitely a worthwhile upgrade. If you don't have an inventory solution, now's not a bad time to get one...

If you'd like to know what is new, or get information about specific features, just ask!

    Thanks,
    Allan Mertner

Can you do license tracking with version 7.1.1?

Can you store your scanned fsf's into a database like DB/2 Universial?

Will PDI also be included in the Network Discovery application? I mean, if I scan the network for 3.000 devices, can I then right click on the device shown in the map and execute a scan? and maybe afterwards be able to view the result of the scan.

If I scan an AIX box, can I then set up or build alarms based on available disk space ? meaning if I scan an Unix station and the disk is 75% full, then I get a message telling me that I maybe have to add more disk or start a clean up sequence.

    Default DI features

Desktop Inventory can discover what licences you need, but does not track these historically. Peregrine positions Desktop Inventory as a pure inventory solution; in order to perform management tasks beyond reports, you need one of either AssetCenter or ServiceCenter where you can do the tracking.

The scan files in PDI are now available either as (compressed) XML files or in the well-known FSF format; the XML format is very well documented. Using a tool like Connect-It, the data in the XML files can be transfered to any database, although Desktop Inventory itself does not ship with a database.

Earlier in the year, PDI v7.1 was deeply integrated with Detwork Discovery, facilitating automatic deployment of scanners and integration with the network side of things, including scheduling, map interaction, database integration and reports. However, Peregrine has decided to not ship this combined product.

Parts of the automation functionality may be available through integration with the Desktop Administration product sometime next year.
