Does anybody have information about SC5 that they are allowed to reveal?

Do we have some beta testers among the members?

    - Operators, more centralized administration, it is now possible to define profile templates

    - Federal databases, SC can connnect to external databases

    - Adaptive learning, the IR expert has been enhanced a lot. One of the new things is that SC will record how often a solution is used and thereby increase the hitcount.

    - n-tier archtecture (load manager) this allows to setup more than 1 application server to distribute the load. However this just introduces 1 new single point of failure! The load manager it self. Another requirement is that the database must be pushed completely to a RDBMS db. The architecure would then be something like this:

    Code:
    	server1 (load manager)

              /

       server2 (sc) server3 (sc)

                          /

    	server4 (database)

    - document engine used consistantly resulting in more consistant flow throughout the application

    - single signon (not what I would call a single signon - it just means that the same user as nt is used)

    - spell checker

    - timer

    - SC launcher for admins - a tool to minimize the number of icons on the desktop. YES NOW we are talking

    - sc.manage screens improved, modify collumns is possible.

    - inbox now can be organised in a tree, and has favorites

    - extended password rules

    - ODBC driver level 2 complient

    - encryption possible on database field level

    - Web dashboard, can display realtime statistics from multible backends.

    Well, how about:

    - stability

    - bugs

    - consistancy

    - etc

in other words more information to those of us that have not had a beta version available to test.

Is SC5 any relation to the "fabled" ROME project that Peregrine is supposed to be doing right now?

ROME as I understand it is a complete re-write of SC using RDBMS as opposed to P4, built with object-oriented languge, as opposed to ANSI C, and support for stuff like Visual Basic for Applications.

It does not sound like it has any of these features. Anyone heard anything else about this project?

    Thanks-

    No I don't think SC5 is "Rome".

I have heard that name for almost as long as I have been working with SC (2 years now). But it has always been a bluur what "Rome" is.

Yeah - that is about how long I have heard it too.

Maybe vaporware? Or maybe they are re-evaluating Rome with the purchase of Remedy?

On the slides it is listed as a utility for administrators.

Well should Peregrine decide they want to keep it for themselves then I just have to go ahead and develop one myself. I actually had this idea 6 months ago but never got around to do it.

If I may add a little comment ...

On the Peregrine Support Web Site, on the welcome page there is link to:

    Synergy02 Presentation Library

that links to a menu where you have:

    Infrastructure Management

    ....

    ....

    ServiceCenter

    ....

and then you have a ppt file named:

    ServiceCenter 5.0 Technical Review

where you get some interesting informations about SC5. There are also some screenshots !!

The main new changes are the modifications to the IR Expert module, the mechanism of federated database and the N-tier application server.....

    Best Regards

    Guillaume

    A word about Rome.

Rome is now known as OAA, or Open Application Architecture. ServiceCenter is not built on OAA but rather a component of the OAA framework. Much like a DVD player could be considered part of a home theater setup.

OAA is also the basis for all of the next generation of applications that Peregrine is currently developing, such as Property Asset Management. Characteristic of OAA are 100% pure web interface (jsp), java servlets, XML, and end-user customizations (displayed fields, query lists, etc.) that can be made right through the browser. OAA allows all of Peregrine's applications, existing, brand new, and yet to be developed, to operate under a single, seamless interface.

Not all functions are supported of course. Some things just aren't practical to do over the web.

I have heard that there will be real encryption between the client and server.
